the phyllis & maggie collections

the patterns in these collections are made by pressing lace into a slab of clay; the lace is from my great grandmommy phyllis’ table linens. these pieces were passed down to me––beautiful stitched table linens like tablecloths, placemats, and napkins. in honor of my grandmother maggie, and my mother and great grandmother phyllis, i’ve named these pieces after them:

in the phyllis collection, i dip the whole piece in glazes that will break beautifully over the lace pattern.

in the maggie collection, i cover the piece in dark glaze or oxide, then wipe it away to reveal a bold lacy pattern. some are simply coated in a clear glaze; others have an edge or corner also dipped into another color.

what better way to preserve these beautiful patterns?
