about aka studio

this is me, holding my biggest bowl to date… somewhere around 2017

hello and welcome! i am amanda kathleen armstrong (aka).

i started working with ceramics in nashville, tennessee. a lovely artist friend happened to teach at a local studio, so i decided to try pottery for a much-needed creative outlet and respite from the dreary winter months.

my first goal was to make all the dishes for my own kitchen. it was an ambitious plan for a beginner. but with a lot of practice, a bit of patience, and support from super talented teachers and classmates, it wasn’t long before my cabinet was full of plates, bowls, and mugs for daily use.

now, after putting in even more studio time over the years, my cabinets are overflowing, and i’m ready to share some of my ceramics with you!

one of my most favorite techniques involves using my great grandmommy phyl’s decorative linens (napkins, tablecloths, placemats). they are pressed into slabs from which i handbuild various items. it is a lovely reminder of my family, and it is an honor to breathe new life into patterns stored away for many years.

while i love to explore different styles and techniques, every piece is individually thrown or handbuilt, perfectly imperfect.

i invite you to stay a while, click around, and see what catches your eye!
